Managing a computer

If there's one thing I have learned through managing my computer, it's that it is definitely a complicated task. I am the sole person managing my computer at home, because although my husband uses a computer daily, he is not up on the management part of it. I am the person who takes care of cleaning up the system, virus protection, troubleshooting, hardware and software, and data security and backup. It's kind of nice at school, because the tech person takes care of all of these things for me, so I can kind of take a break from my management role at work. However, it's a different story at home. In order to be an effective manager, I need to know what hardware and software I need and how to run it, how to defragment and clean disks when things get sluggish, what virus protection is best and how to use it, what to do if a virus is detected, how to fix common problems and where to go if I can't fix it, and how to backup our information so we don't lose everything in case of a system crash. All of it can be very overwhelming, and you really have to stay on top of it daily in order to be an effective manager with a smooth-running system.

  1. It is nice to sit back at school and not have to worry about my computer being safe. That is in some other guy's hands! Although, I do watch what comes through my email and make sure I "junk" the iffy stuff. But I do have to be extra careful at home because keeping MY computer safe falls on ME. Do you backup your computer? If so, how often?

  2. I envy you, Andi, as you seem very capable of managing your home computer. I, on the other hand, let my computer do what it wants. Where did you learn how to take care of your computer so well? Do you have a regular schedule in order to make sure everything is done? I update my computer when it tells me it needs an update. I am very much at it's mercy!

  3. Amen Andi!

I too enjoy the task of the computers at work being someone else's problem, that is until I got a "loaner" laptop from the district. I find I don't have the time to take it to central offices to remedy its most current problem.

  4. Andi, I am too the sole computer manager at home, but at work, though more relaxed, I am the one that manages the computers in the building if something is not functioning properly. It is nice to have this knowledge we are learning to be more effective. It is overwhelming, especially if there is something that I cannot answer and the resources that we are suppose to have are not available either.

  5. It can be exhausting, but once you set up a system of preventative maintenance, the tasks become less daunting. Until the system crashes.
